Counsellor (M. Couns, UM)

Uma Rajasingam holds a Masters degree in Counselling from University Malaya, and has more than 10 years’ experience in the field of mental health counselling. During the course of her career, she has worked with many types of clients including college students, people in midlife transition, families, corporate clients, and parents of troubled children. 


Work Experience:

Her experiences involve people of all ages and extend to a variety of settings—universities, government hospitals and NGO’s. Most recently she was a full-time lecturer in Behavioural Science at a local private university, where she taught psychology, ethics and communication skills to medical students, and she is thus very comfortable working with young adults. She has also worked with refugees in the area of mental health counselling under the auspices of the UNHCR, and with families of psychiatric patients in the Psychiatric Department of Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital, Klang.


At present, she works as a full time counsellor, and holds workshops for university students and corporate clients on mental health issues with topics such as ‘Stress and Its Effects on Mental Health’, ‘Depression and its Signs’ and ‘What goes on in the Mind of A Suicidal Person’. Uma has written two books in the psychological fantasy genre, and is currently involved in producing a third book, non-fiction, which is on Writing Therapy. 


Expertise and Research: 

Uma is familiar with Family and Marriage Counselling techniques, and is trained in Expressive Arts Therapy and Adolescent Counselling. In her work, she focuses on using Sand Tray Therapy and Creative Journaling. Her research in University Malaya was in the area of using expressive arts therapy with individuals coping with midlife transition. 


She has written the following research papers:


1. ‘Using Creative Journaling as a Tool to Help Clients Renew Life Priorities During Midlife Passage’ published by Perkama International Counseling Convention (Abstract in Conference Proceedings)

2. ‘Assessing the Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Academic Performance in Medical Students’ published in International Conference on Qualitative Sciences and its Applications (ICOQSIA) Conference Proceedings)
